Yamaha's system is one of the three or four best factory analog pickup systems worldwide. If I could buy it loose, I would drill the holes in my D-18. As it is, it's only available at the time of purchase. If you play out more than once a week, it can be very useful. Otherwise, a K&K is fine.

I haven’t felt the need for a pickguard as I don’t use a pick with this guitar. No, I didn’t have any tan lines, and removed the replacement guard after 3 years. Here is a recent photo |

The K&K isn't going to sound any where near as good as the stock pickup the FSX5 has. One of the best out there IMO.

[QUOTE=davidd;7431785]You have me now deciding if I should take off the black one I have on mine. [\QUOTE]
Whatever you decide, I think the finish on yours is superior to mine (looks less orange) so that’s an improvement Yamaha maybe made on this model. Mine is a 2020 model. I also think the black plastic guard looks a lot better than the fake wood pickguard (the original pickguard on mine didn’t have the black plastic one underneath the faux wood) |

Just added a K and K to my new FG9. The beauty of the K and K is that is totally passive. No knobs, batteries or electronics in the guitar to someday break down and reduce the value of the instrument. I like my electronics to all be outboard so I can upgrade and repair as needed with no effect on the guitar.

Hi have an LJ-16 that I have permanently out on a stand in the house. I use at as my 'couch guitar' and it is fantastic for it's price.
I did hear that they were going to be discontinued as they are too good for the money and are stopping people buying the more expensive models. Not sure how true that is though... |

Not saying you need it if you don't want it, but they protect from more than picks. Willy didn't put that hole in Trigger with a pick. That was all fingernail.

Having spent a lot of time in my career unwinding carefully crafted "non-position statements", I am not sure how to interpret the 2022 announcement as it doesn't really commit to anything except not taking new orders. Could well mean they will continue to produce these MiJ L models... or maybe or not. Relatively new L models are still in the supply chain, at least in some places online and in small numbers. Alas. |

I didn’t rewatch the whole thing, but I think it’s this one. https://youtu.be/b6IB0trJoJU?si=fxcLsprqAtSdfntP In another video his luthier says the hole formed because pieces of wood get stuck under his nails when he plays. Probably both. Last edited by Tleek; 04-08-2024 at 09:29 AM. |

I liked the part in the luthier video where they talked about the exact replica they made so they wouldn't have to work on Trigger any more. And he was like, "isn't that special?" (not actual words) |
