Stage Lighting
Hey, I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place or not.
I'm looking for some real basic portable cheap lighting to use for a 2 person group playing small bars and other smaller venues. Something that says "hey we are over here".. Anyone have any suggestions on lighting units. I know nothing about lighting. Thanks. |

You also need a light boom which consists of a 50' base, 8' of 1.5" threaded schedule 40 pipe, two sand bags for counterweight, a non-swiveling cheeseborough and a 3' section of 1.5" pipe on which you're going to hang the lights forming a "T." You'll need Altman lighting "C" clamps for your PARS as well and of course extension cords.
Do you really want to lug all that around?

We just bolt one light to a speaker stand on each side of the stage and go with that. Works fine for lighting a duo. We went cheap and bought two LED cans off eBay for $20 each. Working fine so far.

I use a pair of Led Pars similar to what Sprucetop shows above. Either standing under the speaker stands or nearby. Light and compact, the rotating colour function is fine for me.

Lights
If you want real cheap, here's what I do for our venue. The lights are close to the performers and don't blind them or heat them up. I use clip-on desk lights with colored bulbs, one white, one orange and one yellow, bright as I can get. I might get other colors to have around for variety. I doubt I have more than $25 in it. They are light, small, and adaptable, no frills.

I have a couple of those PAR lights and they're great. But honestly, most of the time I use LED rope lighting.

I've got a couple of those LED PAR lights as well, clamp them on a speaker stand, or just angle them up from the floor.
If you shop ebay, you can find them pretty cheap.

For a small venue, these are all good suggestions. You may want more than two lights. You want something that says, "Hey, we are over here". So, besides lighting the performers, placing a light on each far end of your area will serve to highlight the size of your stage.

For the kind of places most of us are playing, it's not a matter of providing full-rig lighting. Just add a little colour and atmosphere. I put a couple of LED Par lights on the floor.
