Hi i have a zoom r16 stand alone recorder and just doing some auto punching on a acoustic guitar track and can't seem to get the original to line up the with auto punch any tips?? I have tried it like 20 times now and use the ab repeat to and practice the part but when i play it back there's always a little click in there.

Not familiar with the zoom, but I'd recommend recording to a new track, starting before the 'bad' place and finish after the 'bad' place. Then you can just cross fade the tracks during mixdown. The 'click' is happening because the sound doesn't quite match up at the punch-in place - with an acoustic track it is hard to match up volume/tone exactly.

Hi MikeB…

I agree. Much simpler and quicker way to deal with overdubs…and/or punch-in/out recording.

The click is most likely because you are cutting in to the middle of a waveform, like this. (very zoomed in!)

Mike and Larry's suggestion is good. If you record to a new track you can cut your replacement take in at a point of silence (where the wave crosses the middle line) or crossfade in and out and it won't click.

So is it a timing (line up) issue or a clicking noise issue, they are in fact different problems .

I am not familiar with the Zoom, or it's daw software , for a timing issue in PT for example you are able to set the timing of the punch in so that that you can hear what's already recorded before it actually punches in, and you can set the actual punch, to take place say just before the downbeat or a good quiet spot.

Recording to a new track will not solve the punch in issue.

To avoid the click either use cross fades or align wave forms. Faster to use cross fades. You still have to be reasonably accurate or you will have timing issues.

It has a rehearse function that allows you to fine-tune your in/out points. Are you using that?

Looks like it has 8 tracks. Have you tried recording in another track and fade as suggested by others?

There's this thing called a "user manual." Read it.

Difficult to get clean punch-ins using the Zoom and the way they describe it. I suggest you record on the Zoom and then transfer the recording to your computer and do the editing there via some DAW (free or low cost (Audacity, Reaper)). Many like Reaper and the price is right. Personally I use Ableton Live.

Doing a second recording to punch in over errors is usually not the way to go. When recording a piece immediately replay the part you messed up and or play the piece through more than once so that you have some punch in material to work with.

It will take you some time to learn your way around whatever DAW you decide to use but it will become routine eventually.

Edit: see elsewhere you are using Cubase so use that for your punch-ins, not Zoom.

See if there is a cross fade function. You could also do it manually but it won't be as easy and probably won't get you the results you want anyway. Essentially, it is combining two tracks into one 3rd track.

Another you could do is relocate the punch in right at the start of a down strum, for example. Do the same with punch out.
