Default A fan is a fan when ?

When your team loses.

Oh, you weren't talking about sports? Never mind...

I don't know what the definition of fan is...

There are certain bands/performers whose work I will buy without ever hearing the first note.

There are certain ones that I will do my best to see if they go on tour, even if I have to park in San Francisco to do so.

There are those whose albums, cassettes and cd's I've worn out (OK, I've yet to wear a cd out...) but I find myself drawn to them still, after all these years.

There are those albums that are 30+ years old that are still as fresh as the day they came out to me and I still get just as excited listening to them.

There are those performers that can turn me into a kid again when I see them in person.

There are those whose songs almost ALWAYS get played when I pick up my guitar, not because its the only song I know, but because it truly brings me joy to connect in that way.

There are some albums that I can't listen to without fantasizing what it must have been like in the moments those tracks were laid down. Sometime sgetting so lost in the moment of the music that I have to listen to the song again to actually hear it.

There are certain artists whom I admire so much for reasons other than the music they've created.

Those are some of the things that come to mind when I think of myself as a fan.

Good question Bern.

Hmmm... that is a very good question. I am only a fan of about one person I guess. His music is the only one I can't live without. He is about the only one I would turn to mush in front of. I like others and love many different songs, but i can't see myself going nuts to follow them around or get to see them.

So, I guess the definition of fan to me is.... what I am when I hear Josh Groban sing.

I think when you are a fan of someone, you'll know it. That's the only definition that matters.

Today, 3rd posted this link to a video by a duo I'd never heard of before:

I was a fan before they got to the first chorus.

Hey, isn't that the same advice given to people who are "in love" for the first time?

This could be the break that Jeff Foxworthy has been looking for...

"You Know You're A Fan, When..."

  • You go to a concert, and by the time you get to the t-shirt booth, they've only got size Small left, and you go ahead and buy one, anyway, even though you're a 2XL...
  • If someone asks you if you've heard a certain song, by a band/musician that you love, you name the CD title, the track number, and the copywrite date.
Or, you could just be a fan, if you play someone's music a lot, and enjoy it...

I consider myself a fan of certain guitar players when I have quite a few (if not most) of their recordings, i.e. Randy Rhoads, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie J. Malmsteen. I also like a lot of guitar players, but I just might have one of their recordings, i.e. Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Beppe Gambetta, Vinnie Moore, Tony Mac Alpine

I think once you tell someone else about an artist, you are then a fan. Of course, only when a positive word is spread.

My point is, if you have to rack your brain that hard to figure out whether or not you're a fan, you probably aren't. Or you're overthinking things just a wee bit.

I saw ladies using fans today at church, because it was a little crowded.

I wasn't a fan of them fanning me. I am always cold.

(But, then again, you weren't talking about THAT kinna fan.)

(Take me away, Cotten. Before they kick me out!)

I sat in the back with the chilly folks. You sat up front with all that hot air going toward you.

If you are game, next week I will trade you places! You sit with Tim and the kids while I will hammer out Chop sticks on your piano.
