Hey Dion. Yes, make sure to come say hi and try them out. Will you be there with your beautiful guitars as well? Took a peak around your website and really enjoyed it.

Yesterday I finished up the last remaining work on the Macassar ebony guitar. Beveled all the edges, finished sanded all the surfaces, and made the bridge. Now both guitars are ready for finish, which will hopefully start next week.

Very cool. Seeing the remnants of your rosette ring, does this mean that you built a full mosaic ring and then cut out the solid piece to inlay into the maple? Well done either way. And if you did, then you have material for another rosette handy. Like I said before, cool stuff.

Good eye Ryan! Are you talking about the piece hanging on the wall? The way that I make this rosette is that I cut out the main piece first, which in this case is the birdseye maple, and then I fit the mosaic pieces to the maple, making small adjustments to the maple to accept the mosaic pieces with a tight fit. Unfortunately I don't usually a have anything left over for the next rosette.

Thanks! Hopefully another time then. I should have some videos from TNAG in the coming months and I'll make sure to share them here.

Since the Cuban mahogany guitar and Macassar ebony guitar were sent off to the finisher today, I tried to make more headway on the third guitar for the show.

Here is a pic of the rosette, attempt number 1. Explanation coming.

Well, I couldn't get over the fact that it didn't turn out as nice as I had hoped. I didn't quite nail the transitions, and I also came to realize that having a carved rosette inset in the top, with small wall on each side of the carved piece could be a nightmare for any neat freak who didn't want crumbs and other debris collecting in the corners. The pic below is to show the crumb situation in the corners. I think I was eating my oreo snack at the time.

So I did the right thing are routed out the carved piece and started over.

My idea for the second attempt was to put a beveled edge on each side of the carved segment, making it harder for dust and debris to collect in the transition. I also wanted to add a white purfling line on the inside and outside of the carved segment. (I plan on carrying the white purfling line border to a carved section for the endgraft, and maybe the headstock. Other than those pieces, there won't be any white lines anywhere on the guitar).

And here with the carved segment installed. I was much more careful to get the carving just right, and I'm very happy with the result. Ahhhh, I can sleep with a good conscience.

There is now only a very, very slight ledge at any point between the carving and the borders. I also think the bevel will help with the finish process. I plan on masking the bevel, and leaving the bevel and carving matte with only some shellac or oil for a finish.

I've been busy the last couple of days assembling my last two guitars, which has set me back on the third guitar for the Woodstock show. But I'm still hopeful I can pull it off (:

A few pics of the two guitars after assembly. They are both Swiss moon spruce over Cocobolo. Some mighty fine cocobolo if I'm allowed to say so.

Here is guitar #3 in binding and purfling stage. Tomorrow I'll get to hit it again full force, and finish up the binding and carved end graft.

And a pic of the top before it was glued to the sides.

I've been busting my tail to get the third guitar ready in time for the show, but it looks like I've come up a few days short. It's currently in finish, but it won't be ready in time. Anyways, here are a few shots of the last few days of work.

Scraping with the special razor blade scraper.

Gluing the heel cap in place.

For the neck heel, I prefer the look of a traditional heel on a non-cutaway guitar. But I wanted to do something small to compliment the carving in the rosette and end graft. I ended up with a strong triangular heel cap, and a small length of undercut closer to the heelcap. I think it's a nice subtle touch that hopefully gets noticed when someone picks up with guitar....as long as they don't immediately say, " man, that guys has a terrible gap in the neck joint".
