NGD - 2017 Taylor 714ce 12 fret LTD
I got this guitar about 10 days ago from Sweetwater. I was contemplating replacing my GS7 (cedar/EIR) with a custom 12 fret cedar/EIR GC. I find I really love the Taylor short scale GC 12 fret bodies and the tone of my GS7 was gorgeous. I also own a K22 12 fret (all koa) so when Taylor rolled out this limited 714, it checked off a lot of boxes for me (GA body just slightly bigger than GC, 12 fret, short scale, cedar top, Koa). I decided to take a chance so I pulled the trigger banking on if it did not have the sound and feel I was looking for, I would just return it.
Happy to say I think this is the best sounding Taylor I have ever played out of the box. There is the responsiveness and sweetness of cedar combined with the clarity of the Koa along with the comfort of the 12 fret short scale neck. Plus the way Taylor does a 12 fret gives this guitar a really great low end especially with the GA body. They should make this a standard model, it's that good to me. It came with Elixir PB Lights and I'm typically not a fan of Elixir strings as my ears don't like how shimmery they are on the high end. But on this guitar, they were not too bad. I did cave this morning and swapped them out with Thomastik Infeld Spectrums (11-52) that sound as nice but with a better high end clarity. I also took the stock Taylor tuners off and replaced them with Gotoh 510's which I think really set this guitar off. Very happy. Here's some pics.

Bee-you-tee-ful. Not normally a cutaway fan, but it works for me with the 12-fret, as do the tuners. I'm sure that big cedar top sounds great, too.

Great looking and I'll bet great sounding! I have been curious about 12 frets and playability vs sound. Does it take less pressure to fret securely? Can you tell an increase in ease of playing? Thanks and congratulations!

Yes to both of your questions.

Bob - that's a gorgeous looking 714 (and I'm sure it sounds just as nice).
Congrats & enjoy! (FYI - you're a bad influence) Dan |

Very nice, congrats! To me a 12 fret with a cutaway is the best way to go. Is the koa more like rosewood or hog? Do you play finger style? If so, is the cedar more responsive (volume) than spruce to you or does it give you just a different "flavor" of tone?

Beautiful guitar!
Both of my 12 frets are GC bodies; I'd love to try one in a GA...

That is absolutely gorgeous. Curious as to whether you use a pick at all to play it...
