Default Bitter Suite: The Oso Landslide

This is the halfway point of my new CD, The Wall Talks. The 3 sections are 1.Dark Skies 2. Rain For Days 3. Never Saw It Coming.

It's played in high dropped D tuning on my Flammang L-40 & a 1934 Gibson L-00, and recorded using Neumann U-87 & Milab DC-63 microphones.

It's dedicated to the victims of the 2014 Oso, Washington mudslide.

I hope you enjoy it!

Howard

Wow, that sounds wonderful, Howard. Beautifully recorded, great composition and playing, and certainly tells a story for me.

I know about all that rain and the accompanying mudslides, though my family has been very fortunate not to have sustained any significant damage or injuries.

I just received your new CD yesterday, but I have been so busy trying to get a garden in that I have not had a chance to listen to it. For the first time this spring the rains have stopped for a little while! So these little samples here are a great way to get started on your CD!

That's a beautiful instrumental tribute Howard. All three sections tie in well.
I recall watching a special on that disaster. It was sobering to say the least.

Hi Glenn,
We're also getting a very late start on planting our annuals....It's been one of those weather years, and a bunch of other distractions. It's a wonder I was able to finish, no less START my CD!

I may have ADD, but hyper focusing sometimes works in positive ways!

I hope you enjoy it!

Very nice Howard. Great piece. Being from Western Washington it has more meaning. Until one has driven highway 530 and seen the enormity of the slide it is hard to appreciate the destruction the Oso slide caused.

Thanks for sharing.

I really like this track. The section (Rain For Days?) that starts about the 3:40 is one of my favorite parts of this most excellent record. The way you finesse those open notes out of the Flammang is a thing of beauty.

Hi Ty,
Actually that's the start of the 3rd section, 'Never Saw It Coming'.

The figure I'm playing to start that section, 30 years ago, was an exercise that I taught beginning students, and at some point in time I realized that D7 figure would eventually be a 'destination' for an as-of-that-point unwritten song.

No wine before its time.

And the hanging open notes are largely due to figuring out that the 1st string should be lowered a whole step!

Glad you enjoy it!
