Some cool but unusual mandolin music
Check this out. It's Bulgarian. The mando he plays is kind of cool too.

Very cool!
Avi is one of the better players around these days. He released a new CD a few months back that was quite good. If I remember correctly, I think Brian Dean made that mandolin for him. I read a feature article on it and it is a beauty. It's very ballsy for a bowlback.

Indeed awesome! I like the mandolin, reminds me of a very old church pew.
I really love when you can see the artists enjoyment of the music on his face as he plays. All the best seem to have this in common, when you watch them they have just a genuine sense of happiness about them. I wish I had the mechanics down good enough to just enjoy the music instead of having to think about what to do next. |

Avi Avital is from Israel. He studied in Israel and Italy.
His mandolin is made by in Israel by mandolin maker Arik Kerman. I have one of his CD's... remarkable player. |

I just saw this video. In the first minute or so he talks about the double topped Kerman he plays in the first video.

I have a couple of his CD's and highly recommend them as good to have.
A classical mandolinist friend gave me the first one a few years back to listen to and I put it away before I listening. What ignorance! :-) He is one of the best "crossover/hybrid style" players out there today. I enjoy listening to him play as well as listening to him talk about his music. He is definitely doing what he was put here on earth to do.

This should explain it well enough. I couldn't give a better example from my own understanding. If it still doesn't come across to you... well, you're on your own.

I've never been to Bulgaria and know nothing about Bulgarian music but the music in the first post has a distinct Balkans flavor that you could hear in just about any country in that area. I think it wouldn't be strange to somebody who is from Israel or some other Middle Eastern country either.
