Q re 12 string playing
I'm fairly new to playing 12 string and as I've been working at using all my bare fingers to pick, I'm finding that strings I'm hitting on the upstroke tend to emphasize the primary string and not so much the octave string. As a result, I feel I'm not getting all the 12 string tone I could be. For now, it's causing me to revert to my former thumb/index finger playing technique where my thumb is used more to first hit the octave string on the downstroke.
I'm not sure there's anything I can do about it if I want to use all my fingers, and I won't revert to using finger picks (love the bare finger feel). Anyhow, I'm open to whatever advice any of you may have. Thanks!

I started playing 12-string in 1969 and soon thereafter learned what is called "hybrid picking" in some circles. It is using a flat pick held between the thumb and index finger while fingerpicking with the 3rd, 4th and 5th fingers. This technique produces solid bass notes and allows the player to move seamlessly from powerful strumming to gentle finger picking without having to put down and pick up any picks. If I recall correctly, the technique became second nature to me in a matter of a couple of weeks and I have been using it ever since.

I can't do it without longer nails or fingerpicks, personally.
