Should I Buy This Guitar ?
Seeking advice. Any advice really, about the Gretsch G6122-1959 Chet Atkins:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guita...lectric-guitar Costs a bit over 4000 locally, and would have to be ordered. Apparently the distributor in California (?) has them on order and they could get to me from Japan in about 6 weeks. I've played a very similar Gretsch but never this one. I'm sure it has that vintage Chet tone, and I'm hoping it can cover hard rock and blues rock with the use of good pedals. I've tried to purchase this model, used, from two American sources. They just don't really respond.

Great guitars! Very unique in their tone. I think $4K is way too muc to spend, but that's me! There is one on reverb right now for $1,750, not sure if they will ship though.

Speaking as a lifelong Gretsch fan and owner since 1964, I wouldn't even think of buying any Gretsch - new or vintage - without trying one of the new MIK 5400/5600 Series Electromatics first. The QC and factory setup on these is some of the finest in their long (and sometimes checkered) history - every bit the equal (and often as not the superior) of both the MIJ Professional Series and the Brooklyn originals, and in a blind test through a good tube amp I doubt you'd be able to tell one from the other; IMO unless there's some compelling reason to buy the '59 Gent (some players prefer the 17" body, wider neck, and/or modified controls) you could have three E-matics and a '65 Twin RI for the price of the Gent alone, and rock the Cavern till all the stray cats come home...

I agree Steve and I've had a great Electromatic. I want this one for the reasons you propose. It also has a pinned bridge, so I've been told, which holds intonation better.

Quite generally
...I think when you have to post a question, wondering whether or not you should buy something...you probably shouldn't. Although hell, it's your money; do as you wish.

buy 6xxx series gretsch used. Depreciation is pretty steep on Gretsch and quality is high. Fantastic used bargains.

Just ordered the guitar, a slightly updated version has been released. Keep in mind that the Canadian dollar doesn't go as far as it used to in the US. That has driven the price of guitars way up up here. I have learned so many styles over 43 years of playing, that will give the guitar a good workout. And I can't wait to try out my overdrive and distortion pedals to see what happens.

Well done!
I've got no doubts the guitar plays as good as it looks! |

The Country Gentlemen are gorgeous guitars in every way. Great, great sound and playability. The zero fret allows for super low action. The filtertrons are incredibly versatile pickups.
Mine is the double cut like George Harrison played on the Ed Sullivan show. I love it. |
