Default Can Someone Suggest a UK Nylon String Builder?

Hi

I've been playing a nylon string classical guitar for quite a while now but never really looked around to see what I could upgrade to. Can anyone suggest a custom nylon string guitar builder within the UK?

Thanks

Yes :

David Whiteman : http://www.whitemanguitars.com/

And/or :

I don't know where you are, but Lewes is a hotbed of luthiery, and the home of some of the worst traffic wardens in the country...apart from Brighton.

Have a look at Kevin Aram. I think that's how you spell it. I had one of his early ones (in the 1970s) and it was OK. At the time he was working in Northamptonshire which is close to me so, although I didn't buy it directly from him, I took it to him for adjustments.

James Lister, in Sheffield. Excellent reputation and probably at a better price point than Aram.

Peter Barton

Never played his stuff but seems well respected with the price tag to match.

Only know about him since he is related to some friends of mine here in Vancouver, BC and they mentioned him to me.

Lots of UK classical guitar makers.

I recommend Martin Woodhouse who spent one year with David Rubio. His prices are at the lower end of the scale, GBP3000 to GBP 2500 and under. http://www.woodhouse-guitars.co.uk/

Gary Southwell, Brian Cohen, Michael Gee, Christopher Dean, Simon Ambridge, Kevin Aram are at the high end of the scale, GBP5000 and up. Rohan Lowe, David Merrin, Phillip Woodfield III, James Lister are in the middle of the pack GBG3500 and up.

A trip to Kent Guitars or Stafford Guitars should prove to be a good education.

You don't have to buy new. Buy used.

The first thing you need to do is decide what sonic style of instrument you want: traditional or modern (i.e. a lattice or double top etc). There is a lot of choice of top class builders in the UK. For traditional I'd personally go for David Merrin. For modern I'd definitely go for Phillip Woodfield.

Bear in mind that a guitar from very sought after builders like Woodfield and Ambridge will entail a wait of several years. I waited 3 years for a Woodfield and it was worth every single second.

You will pay a lot more via a dealer but you will get it quicker. Your choice.

Cheers,
Steve
