Default January 2, 2017 Update

I added the link to Bruce's build post (Sexauer/'17) to my initial post. The build of the guitar will be journaled by Bruce there. Once it is completed, I will add my impressions, photos, videos et al. in this post...

I kinda thought I would journal it here too, or sharing between the two threads, at least while Bob is out of town for a bit.

In any case, I actually did join the plates today:

Even from 35,000' over the Atlantic (where I am as I write this), those two sets look great...

Default The excitement builds . . .

The back strip is under there somewhere:

I am really liking the look of that mild mannered, straight grained BRW in the rough cut back. Perhaps the backstrip itself is as interesting as Bruce's level?

I think I have a clear enough geometric concept to start the rosette tomorrow.

A bit of progress has been made, but I am putting a lot of time this week into cleaning up the shop for today's meeting of our local Luthier's Support Group, NCAL.

Scraping the inside of the back to receive the braces has revealed an interesting pattern of spots in the rosewood:

This is turning out great.... love that Brazilian rosewood, it would be rare nowadays to find a set with such amazing straight grain.

Also good to know that you kept the back leveled as you glued the reinforcement strip in. That should allow the effect of gravity to distribute itself evenly...

Default Go-bar deck

Bruce has the German Spruce top in his go-bar deck, a 3-1/2" diameter sound hole (1/8" smaller than a standard single 0) has also been cut and the rough x-brace stock has been hot hide glued to the top on a 42' dish (left). The BRW back has four roughed spruce ladder braces awaiting their turn in the go-bar deck on an 18' dish (right).

Smile Even later to this party...

Mighty nice guitar on the way!!! I love the esthetic choices. Like a Martin on steroids.

This will be fun to follow

Cheers

I'm subscribing to this thread. Single 0 with German/Brazilian is as good as it gets IMO. Been lusting for single 0's for a while now, so very curious how this will turn out.

Here are a couple of pics that show my basic profile on the first of my three tiers of top bracing, followed by their "tuned" profile.

Default Tuners

Here are some photos of some custom Cocobolo Sapwood buttons on the Waverly three-on-a-plate tuners made by luthier Burton LeGeyt. I suspect the color of the sapwood is a bit lighter in color than they appear in these informal shots (the camera is metering off the spruce).

I applaud the choices so far, and though a small detail, I really like that back seam inlay. Nice!
