Default CA OX sighted - Ledward Kaapana with Fran Guidry

I'm pretty sure Fran is playing a CA OX here (although not certain) - I know he had one at one stage and it sure looks like it. If not, enjoy anyway!

That's my "vintage" OX alright. The CA is my "F taropatch" guitar and since we were actually scheduled for an `ukulele session I brought it along "just in case." I had to capo 2 when we wound up playing "Kolomona Slack Key" in G.

Led really doesn't need accompaniment on the uke, so I persuaded him to go solo. He did a couple of tunes on his gorgeous new Moore Bettah tenor in Macassar ebony and red spruce:

The story has one error - Led used a Wahine tuning for "Wee Ha Swing" but not for "Na Lei O Hawai`i." That tune was done in standard `ukulele C6 tuning - G C E A.

Tdq;

Thank you for bringing this here. That Fran guy is incredibly precise and clean.

And it's nice to see some recognition of CA instruments. I've always felt that the Ox plowed just about every field imaginable.

Hey Evan, no probs! I don't know if you recall I posted a slack key tune on an Emerald baritone some years ago, back in the Macnichol days. I was inspired by a tune I saw Fran playing back then on this very same OX ("Papalina Lahilahi"). Nice to see it back in action!

It looks like the Stringletter folks - Acoustic Guitar Mag and `Ukulele Mag - pay attention to the AGF at least a little. They contacted me to let me know they had corrected the tuning notation in the article I mentioned above.

Since there seems to be a bit of interest I put together a playlist of clips that feature the OX:

Mr. Guidry;

Tdq has brought to my attention a lot of really good music. I was unfamiliar with your music until he pointed out your work with the Ox. You are a marvelous musician and I appreciate your taking the time to bring to bring us other work.

Also, while I have your ear; what instrument is Mr. Kaapana playing?

Thanks for the kind comments.

If you're referring to the "Ku`u Ipo Onaona" clip, he's playing my Tacoma Papoose, a rather rare all koa model.

In the AG Mag clip he's using a Collings dread that they had hanging on the wall.

Thank you. I was struck by the apparent wide nut width. That is after I recovered from the superb music.

My Louisiana OX has a 1 3/4 nut which was the only option in those days. Luckily it's my preference. I understand that the current Mississippi OX includes a narrow neck option.

Yo, Kramster;

I've been wondering if you are still playing your marvelous nylon string guitar?

kramster;

ALAS! Our bond based on the ownership of nylon string guitars has been lost. Unless, maybe you are going to replace it with a CF nylon?
