Default Laurie Williams Video on milling wood...

Laurie Williams just completed a pretty spectacular 20th anniversary guitar. He made a really cool video on how he milled the wood - floated it down river, etc for this special anniversary guitar.

Check it out - http://www.guitars.co.nz/paraoanui_sinker_movie.html

Kindly,
Danny

Thanks, Danny. Nice video. Laurie must have felt a great sense of accomplishment with that guitar.

Thanks for the link! You should bring over your new Laurie Williams guitar to our next Front Range AGF gathering, always a good time.

I thought about the jointer too.... I thought it was so cool to see him working with his sons. I think that's awesome.

SJ, glad you liked the music!

Kindly,
Danny

I met Laurie at the Healdsburg Guitar Festival this past August and he was a super nice guy. He and his wife were very friendly and he has some pretty interesting stories behind the woods he builds from.

Cool vid.

Thanks for posting.

Kevin.

Thanks for sharing Danny, nice little video.
great to see the whole family involved.
If the mystery of the what native timber the log is hasn't been solved, I am pretty confident it's Kahikatea. It is an incredible tonewood and normally is very white in appearance. It has all the wood properties and tonal characteristics of Adirondack spruce. So I bet this anniversary guitar sounds fantastic!!!

Cheers,

Christian.

Thanks for the link Danny - great video.

Laurie brought the almost finished 20th anniversary guitar to the Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival recently. It was not ready to play, just to look at. And it looked absolutely phenomenal . In addition to his work with New Zealand woods, Laurie is also uses New Zealand mother of pearl, and the inlay on this guitar is incredibly fine and an absolute joy to behold.

Keep an eye on the Guitar Gallery website for more photos soon!

That was so great to watch and listen to. Thanks! Makes me want to be a woodsman (well, maybe watch someone be a woodsman and I'll just take the timber at the end)

Laurie sent me an email today telling me he sent the off to a specialist to find out what the species is.

He said: "I sent a sample to Dr. Lloyd Donaldson, Senior Scientist - Plant Cell Walls & Biomaterials at the Scion research centre in Rotorua, New Zealand and he has positively identified a sample as:
Tanekaha (Phyllocladus trichomanoides)

It is usually rather denser than this sample so it is a curious log that popped up out of the river."

I thought my fellow wood fans would find that interesting!

Kindly,
Danny
