Here are two threads I had when I was asking some similar questions and then sharing my thoughts as I purchased a KM. More fodder for the research, good hunting to you!

From what I've seen and heard I really like the look (especially the colors around the sound hole ) and tone of the KM, but that price tag ? Ouch, too rich for my blood.

Sable
I received a Sable from Ted recently (always a pleasure to do business with).
I've owned ovations since the early 70's, and most recently one the top of the line 1680 premiere Adamas. (I do believe that guitar would convert Ovation skeptics.). I have a Rainsong LA2-LE, and it shines with crystalline purity. I agree with Ted's assessment above that the Sable is more fundamental. UNTIL, I restrung the stock Elixer medium nanowebs with Simonoff medium lights. Right now the KM sable is extraordinarily responsive and musical. I would not hesitate to recommend either the Sable or the Rainsong. ...horses for courses of course. |

I am the one who had the opportunity to find a used Kevin Michaels travel guitar at my local Guitar Center and to play it extensively. I didn't "hate" it as a forum member reports, but for sure I was disappointed. The sound was OK but a bit muddy, I have played so many carbon fiber guitars of any brand, Emerald, Rainsong, CAs, also a Blackbird Super OM, and I didn't find a reason in the sound of the Kevin Michael's guitar that could justify such a high price.
More over, the 22.5 scale was really too short for me. BUT... may be I played a lemon, although with a carbon fiber guitar, this is difficult to happen. In my very personal opinion, the CA Cargo (which costs half the price) and the Emerald X7 OS (which costs 995.00 and has a 24 inches scale) are more reasonable options. |
