I think it really depends on what you want to play. Certain songs/styles are going to lend themselves more to the Low G, and others will lend themselves more to the High G. I think it's important to have one of each.

Lately, I end up playing more with the High G, because it has more of that classic ukulele sound. Also, the songs that I am learning are based with a high G, so that dictates everything.

Have fun! Ukes are awesome!

I had low g before I bought a guitar. Now that lower sound isn't needed and my ukuleles are back to high G. I love the difference in playing and how much melody I can pull out of the high G string. My main ukulele, custom made, is a 5 stringer with both high and low G. I like this best.

I've also heard of a few folks that keep both a high g and low g string. They keep the length long enough so they can take them off and on again multiple times. I've never done it myself so not sure how well that works. I have both a high and low g uke to solve the problem though I don't have big money in either (around 400 dollars each). I do tend to play the high g much more often but folks at our uke club will play low g almost exclusively too.

Good luck.

Default Buying a tenor uke - Low or High G?

If you watch the Mya-Moe YouTube series "Birth of a Mya-Moe", Gordon Mayer talks about how they slot the nut so that you can string either the low or high G with no buzzing.

Seems most folks recommend high G but suggest initial setup for low G to have the future option (which sounds smart!). Anyone ask HMS to cut the nut wider for low G but then string it for high G for delivery? Wonder if they'd do that...

I like the soprano and concert ukuleles strung with a high G and the tenor either high or low. The tenor uke is a strange thing, and I've often thought it should be tuned lower overall, as it's too much like a concert uke. If you have a baritone, try capoing it to get an idea of the low G tuning before you commit.

There are some Aquila string sets with an unwound (red) low G that should fit in the high g nut. I actually bought one of these sets, but didn't have a chance to try it out yet.
