Washtub Bass
Do any of you play washtub bass. I have found a few bands with a wtb, but never in person. I have a wtb and sure would likr to play it (along with many other instruments).
Thanks, glennf |

Hey Glen:
I personally don't, but I do know a fellow who does a very nice job with one. In fact, compared to some of the often less articulate (lower cost) upright bass instruments out there, I've been quite impressed with just good it can sound. So, I guess you might call me a potential convert on the subject.

I saw a punk rockabilly two-piece band (duo?) and the tatted up guy with the pompadour haircut rocked that single string on a broomstick atop an upturned galvanized washtub.
Theirs was like this: Not like this: I thought he was joking when he asked me to mic it (had never heard of this before), but he rocked it and it sounded great and had good intonation, I was fully impressed. |

I've got a buddy in a band called "The Naked Bacon" that has a WTB. He used an old galvanized WT (modern ones are thinner), an eye bolt and washer in the center, and a hickory axe handle. Really leans on that thing, and can get some more notes out of it than others I've seen.
Others its more of a percussion instrument than a bass, but he actually plays bass lines on it. Tried it out, and he said I was pretty good for a beginner. And with some practice I'd be OK. Going to make one myself one day. Mom and dad have an old wash tub in the barn that was left over from the '50's. |
