I live about 120 miles from the McIlroy Guitars workshop (by car and ship or air) and I finally got to play one.... in Perth WA.

Wow! what a guitar. The guy in the shop knew I was not buying and was steering me towards some 'lesser' guitars at first - it was almost as if I had to audition for the chance to play the big guns. But then he gave me free range and the McIlroy was in a different league to anything else around.

I love my Lowden but I really think it would feel better in the company of another Irish masterpiece.

There's a "small guitar shop in Spearfish, SD"??? We used to live there. I had to go to Rapid City to buy strings.

One of my plating buddies has a Martin Custom Shop HD-28 (fine herringbone, GE bracing, cloth side strips), Alpine over Madagascar.

If it had a 1-3/4" nut I would kidnap it, and I can't even play dreads without pain anymore. No low end mud, a wall of sound, strong fundamental, balanced harmonics/overtones, that reverb/swell you get from great rosewood during the long decay.....very tasty guitar !~!~!

Default Nicest guitar that you recently played that wasn't yours.

Pre War 00-42 last week.

Yikes, can't get it out of my mind.

I recently played a Michael Keller Jumbo. Sublime. I'm working on prying it out of the owner's hands..... finger's crossed.

My bandmate had two of them.
They are matching Martin D-42 Custom guitars.
One is a 6 string and the other is a 12 string.
Both have Adirondack tops.

Not only beautiful but they sound fantastic.

A Martin HD-28V a couple of weeks ago at Sam Ash. Sounded beautiful, played great. I'd have to sell every guitar I own to get it (or win the lottery).

A Collings 000-1 at The Twelfth Fret in Toronto. Seems like forever ago though. 10 years past maybe? I just kept playing and playing that guitar. Buying it was just not in the cards at that point in time so after what must have been a half hour(?!) of playing I put it back on the wall. Another guy in the shop grabbed it the second I put it back up. Must have liked what he heard! I'm surprised I haven't bought a Collings by now but none have measured up to that 000-1. A few at McCabe's came close though.

Nicest? A brand new Collings OM-2H Traditional - lush, deep, powerful, awesome guitar. But that's not the one I want to buy. On that same day, I played a Waterloo WL-S - that's the one

A Collings dread, Adirondack over mahogany. It stood out over Martin rosewoods, it wasn't volume as much as clarity with separation. I didn't play it much, but heard it played in a manner that reinforced my own thoughts. Playing the guitar was more than the sound- it played VERY nicely.... the kind of guitar that could make a man quit his job.....
