Default 2018 Indy Car First Track Test at Indy

Yesterday Juan Pablo Montoya and Oriol Servia did shakedown tests of next years body work on the DW12 chassis. Both drivers gave the new aero package high marks. The car looks better too. Here are a couple of videos.

And, the obligatory post test review by Miller & Pruett.

There will be a road course test next week after the Mid-Ohio race. Then we will see the car with bigger wings and aero tweaks.

IMHO the car looks much better. It is a modern interpretation of the cars that raced in the 1990's and into the 2000's. That was the era I spent 15 years photographing Indy Cars for Pennzoil.

Here is a shot Gil de Ferran from 1995 qualifying. The car is a Reynard chassis with a Honda V-8.

I don't know much about it or follow the sport it but will keep on eye or ear open because the head of Honda chassis dynamics is a member of our MTB club and rides at my home trail system. It's not a surprise that he's a hard charger and rides a racing style bike.

The car looks FAR better than it has the last few years. Sleeker and faster looking. I'm glad the rear pod is gone.

It will be interesting to see how the road race kit looks.

You will not have to wait too long. There is a Mid-Ohio test scheduled with the road course trim. I found these renderings of what the car will probably look like. My guess is that they will bring several sets of road course wings to the test. The series runs a variety of road courses. Some like Mid-Ohio medium to high down force is preferable and tracks like Road America favor a more trimmed out car with less down force.

I still miss the "run what you brung" days. One of the real high points of Indy used to be teams revealing their latest innovations just for the 500. Diesels, turbines, stock blocks, sharkfin wings (now showing up the formula 1) used to create a lot of excitement.Today, if someone had an innovation equivalent to the introduction of rear engine cars, they couldn't run.

Almost all racing has become a homogenized spec car series with little deviation.

Rumor has it that next year at the Indy 500; every team will be given a "Participation Trophy" at the banquet.

For the most part the road course trim looks good, too. Too much front wing, though.
