Default Havens and the Guild -- The Woodstock Movie NOW

TCM (Turner Classic Movies) is currently showing the Director's Cut of the Woodstock Movie - Right now Richie Havens is playing his Guild nearly to death. Just a PSA to any AGF'r who happens to be on the boards this fine evening . . . . . .

I could never enjoy Ritchie Havens - as I was always waiting for his guitar to disintegrate.

I think I read that he got though a number of them every year.

I wasn't much of a Havens fan either. For me the outstanding performances at Woodstock were Santana, and in particular the late Mike Shrieve's (then just 19), drum solo on 'Soul Sacrifice'. The other was Tim Hardin, completely out of it but with a beautifully sung rendition of 'If I Were A Carpenter' on his old Harmony.

I was never a huge Richie Havens fan, but his Woodstock performance was riveting. He opened the festival, and played for 3 hours because other scheduled artists had trouble reaching the concert site due to traffic. His famous "Freedom" song was an on-the-spot improvisation, having run out of songs to sing, and was in my opinion, simpling amazing.

You are so, so right!!! What an amazing performance - how many years later, and I still don't tire of this version of Soul Sacrifice....

Richie visited my guitar pushers store before he passed away. Now, despite what some folks think that inventory is NOZ insured for scratches and dings. So he was not amused when Richie walked in.

Four hours later Richie has been playing everything without beating it showing respect for the inventory and entertaining everyone who entered the store. When he left my guitar pusher was a big Havens fan.

I agree completely. For me, Shrieve was the star of Woodstock. Incredible solo... still considered one of the greatest in rock history. It's funny... my brother and I were discussing it recently, so I've watched it several times lately. Great solo.

Michael Shrieve is still on the planet.

But, yes, I agree with you - Shrieve's drum solo had the most incredible pulse! And I never cared for Havens' torturing-the-guitar style at all, either.

For me the stars were Alvin Lee and Sly Stone, also The Who were in top form!

Apologies to Mr.Shrieve for my erroneous reporting of his demise

Richie once told me that the entire song - 'Motherless Child' was one he literally sang and arranged on the spot. This was because the promoter told him that the next act was going to be late and they needed him to extend his set. He went on saying that one song wound up to be his most popular and requested number of everything that he's done since.

I never get tired of seeing him play that song. My wife and I went to see Judy Collins play at the Garden State Arts Center a few years ago. We saw him sitting up front and my wife went up and had about a 10 minute conversation with him before the show started. Told me he was the nicest person.

That seems the way with many iconic songs as well. Go figure.
A great writer told me, "great songs write themselves with help from above"
