I think there must be a line up in front of you looking for the very elusive J 41.
Good luck. d |

I've had two over the years and they were both tremendous....the upper bout was just a tad too big for me....they are some of the best sounding Martins hands down...best of luck in the search!

yeah....I have a great J-40M that I love, but I am looking for something with a little wider neck. And a modified V neck profile. But that would be probably asking too much....

I'm the proud/lucky owner of a 2006 J41 Special. Don't think I'll ever let her go.

That's what I am talking about!!!!! The specs that are published are confusing...is that an 1-3/4" nut?
A Martin J-40, even early J-40M are very common and very under-valued. They are a dynamic, responsive and well balanced guitars. My son was playing mine when I first got it. He has a well setup old D-28. After about two hours of playing he said he could not have the J-40 at home....it was too easy to get too loud. |

J-41
There was one on Mandolin Café a while back but it disappeared. Actually couldn't believe what I was seeing. Not sure if it sold. I do an advanced search through Google once in a while that searches all Craigslists and it showed up on Craigslist in Fort Collins Colorado. It was there for a while. Do some Google searches around that area and see if it shows up. It was on Craigslist for some time so the add might have ran out instead of them selling it. Think outside the box when you are looking, you'll find one. Good luck!

the dreds, which ruled them out for me. But the J-41 Special came with the wider 1 3/4" nut, which made it an even rarer bird. Steve

I highly recommend downloading the "CPlus for Craigslist" app for your mobile devices. It's useful for searching for and locating specific models. You can choose the CL local sites on which to to apply your search - I have over 120 CL sites tagged for my search. I just ran a search on "Martin J" and came up with several J-40s/J-40Ms, a couple J-15s, and a bunch of Gibsons (J-45s mostly). Sorry, no J-41s came up in my search. Using this app over the past 6 months, I found the aforementioned J-41 Special (Ft Collins CL site) and also a very sweet and beautifully cared for 1977 HD-28 (Orange County CA CL site) . I live in Northern Virginia. Yes, you may have to deal with skeptical sellers tired of dealing with scammers. But in both cases above I simply emailed the seller with a brief introduction (including my handles for AGF, UMGF, eBay), and asked specific and informed questions about the instruments, in part to establish my credibility. In both cases the sellers called me back via phone that day and we struck a deal very quickly. Maxtoon77, good luck in your search! You'll find one in time, although I think less than 300 J-41 Specials were ever built. One more note... I do think the Martin J series, J-40s included, are incredible values compared to the corresponding D-40 series. I've seen D-40s and even a D-41 Special sell for far more the the jumbo line. I don't get it. |

I was just telling my wife how much I miss mine. I only sold it because it had the big electronic control module cut into the side and I grew to dislike that type of electronics over time. Maybe I'll get my hands on another one some day too. Good luck with your search. They come up for sale here every couple of years it seems.

I remember seeing the J-41 with the mounted electronics panel. Talk about commitment!
It seems like none of the 1-3/4" wide nut guitars are easy to find - HJ-36 and 38, even OM-18V are getting difficult find. I have a friend who has been looking for a nice one for a month. I was tempted to steer him toward a D-18 GE..it has a 1-3/4" nut and I am told it is a very good finger style guitar. Anyone have any experience? |
