Such progress. I don’t know Bruce, maybe Jessupe is correct in that you are some variety of guitar bot. If so, makes me wonder who I spent the day with tapping on wood, maybe the bots avatar.
Anyway and, before I go down another rabbit hole, let me say that this guitar does look fabulous. I don’t have much experience with Koa as a tonewood but it is expressively beautiful - certainly this set is exceptional.

I have about 8 more sets of nice Koa, but none THIS nice.
The neck is ready for finish, and the body should follow tomorrow. THEN we'll see some fireworks! |

I am pretty sure Bruce does it in his sleep. He has built enough guitars that it would not surprise me.

I’ve heard snoring vibrations have a profound opening up effect on tonewoods.

I did get the OM(G) into finish today. The first two pics are decent light but merely the sealer. The third pic is the first coat of varnish, but in the feeble light of my spray room.

This Koa has been waiting in my stash for 6 or 8 years! I was wondering if it would ever get the nod from someone. This set is hardly alone in that regard, there are quite a few great sets of this and that for my customers to pick from. Every set was chosen by myself for its potential to make an exceptional guitar, and not all are what most people would call expensive . . . though of course some probably are. I've got a quarter sawn set of "The Tree" I've had for 15 years with no takers yet in sight, priced well under market the whole time! I should probably stop pointing out that it's just fancy mahogany.

I have got 5 coats on the Koa OM, and project one more on the top and 3 more on the back and sides.
I am experimenting with finish, and have found the Murdoch's I am trying at Tim McKnight's suggestion dried quickly and MUCH harder than the Ace I have been using for years. Thus the JB-L00 I am making for la Conner and which is Murdoch's has out paced the FT-L00-JB/2 started before it and will likely receive strings today. There is more to varnish than drying time, and I am going to turn a very critical ear to the tonal results of the experiment. I have got the JB-L00 strung and have played it for an hour or so. It is unusually loud for one of my L00's, and has great clarity. The Bass is a bit fuller than expected, it sounds as though it has a side port, which it does not. It could be a little sweeter, and probably will be when it is more than 2 hours old.
Looks like the weight, sans PG, is 3.6 pounds, which is light for an Amazon guitar. An L00 is actually very close to the same size as an OM, considerably larger than what I usually think of as a 00. |
