Hey Harv, Don't forget that third hand is handy too while sitting to hold things like glue spreaders and other assorted tools. Cotten, I tried to chew the plastic glue spreader but I darn near broke a tooth so I had to spit it out. |

In Tim's case he borrows my hands, too.

Moar pics plz. I love watching Tim work. He makes it look easy - though we know it's not!
Tim, I hope you're feeling better. Does this mean that you'll be building less exotic woods like this? FWIW I hear good things about walnut!

I searched for B.C. Engelmann spruce and came up empty handed. I am aware of a spruce hybrid that occurs naturally in small areas of B.C. called Lutz spruce. Is B.C. spruce your name for Lutz spruce? Sweet build so far by the way. Glad you are up and about again. Edited to add info on Lutz spruce: Lutz Spruce, Picea lutzii Description: On the Kenai Peninsula, there are natural hybrids between White Spruce and Sitka Spruce, which are called Lutz Spruce. These hybrid trees can be recognized by their leaves and cones, which are intermediate to the parent species. The Lutz Spruce is found where the ranges of White Spruce and Sitka Spruce meet and/or overlap. The above info came from this link about 1/3rd down the page: http://www.alaskadenalitours.com/ala...of_alaska.html Last edited by Tony_in_NYC; 05-01-2012 at 08:06 AM. Reason: add info |

Lutz spruce is a naturally occurring hybrid that can be a cross between two or three of the following spruces: Sitka, White and Engelmann, but always with Sitka. It can be Sitka and White, Sitka & Engelmann or a hybrid of all three. As far as I know there are only two people who have permits to legally harvest Lutz spruce. BC Engelmann is not a name that I coined but rather the name that it was sold to me by the sawyer who harvested the wood. I believe BC Engelmann grows in a remote area of British Columbia (BC) where Sitka doesn't grow so it only hybridizes with White & Engelmann spruces. I doubt you will find much info on it and as far as I know it was only sold by one individual in Canada many many years ago and not commercially available in large quantities. FWIW, I don't build with it a lot because I don't have much left. I just strung a guitar up about three weeks ago and it has a LOT more headroom than your typical Engelmann does but still retains the warmth and richness that Engelmann is known for. |
