Default Patching holes on back and side of old Gibson

I've been looking at buying a 1940's Gibson LG1 that needs some major TLC. It has a major hole in the back at the bottom of the bell and it carries over into the sides. It's also needing a brace rebuilt and a number of them glued back into place. The seller claims the neck and bridge are good and stable. Trying to see if the structural issues can be fixed for a decent price before I pull the trigger on this purchase.
The seller has been very up front and honest thus far in his communication. I'm not very experienced in this kind of repairs on a vintage instrument. I'll try and post some pics. Any info or response will be helpful, thanks.

Tried getting the pictures to post, didn't seem to link up with my Flickr.

I'll try again...

Expect a bill of close to a 1000 dollars to replace the back and sides, or patch repair may be able to be done for about 300-400

Thanks for the response. I would love to keep the back and sides and get it patched since its 80yr old mahogany. Well my budget for repairs is about 400-500. So that might be worth it considering what he wants for it.

I figured I could get an lg1 that doesn't need a lot of work from the 50's for 1,200-1,500. So I have to weigh if getting this one from the 1940's is worth the repair costs. It doesn't seem to have any decernable serial on it for identification that it is indeed from the 40's...

Youre going to pay out a decent amount to get that fixed. Like Steve said it'll.be a few hundred to get started. That's provided the neck angle is actually good etc...

Yea, I would be buying sight unseen too. Sounds like it might be smarter to keep shopping around for a more complete guitar. Thanks for the insight!

That looks like a fun project.

I did a very similar one, on a smaller scale. Take a look here

P.S. if you decide not to do this, please PM me - as I would be very interested in buying this project guitar (seriously)

Fazool: unless the seller is willing to cut his price down by 200-300, I doubt I'll be buying it. If I could repair it myself maybe, but I'm not that talented yet. I'll send you pm.

that's a lot of work...

look up the numbers first (fon# in blue ink inside on the neck block, and the serial# ) to confirm age and buy cheap. if you go for this, it will be only and investment in learning and pride.

You are way way undercharging, Steve. I suggest that you begin by doubling your prices. Then you will only be inexpensive.

Well the seller is sticking to his guns on price. I showed the pictures to two local luthiers and both the quotes were above 1k for all the work known to be needed and a new saddle with setup. So I'm passing on this one big time. I'll save my $$$ and wait for a better LG-1. I'm selling a few of my electrics to help fund this endeavor.

Let him sit on it for a while and then hit him up again. Maybe after a few months of simply sitting on it with no real offers will change his mind.
