Default Gibson SG Standard '61 Reissue Special Edition Review

After ordering one of this short-run of guitars that Dave's Guitar Shop commissioned, I've now had the guitar for a month. I've taken it in for a setup and had plenty of time to evaluate it so this isn't one of those "I opened the box this afternoon" things. I've had time to compare it to Les Pauls, ES-335s, Teles, and Strats.

So, if you are interested in how it turned out, wander on over to my site, HERE.

Nice review, Bob!

I love the raw tone that a SG gives, but I always have a love- hate relationship with the looks. Some days I think the shape is ugly, and others, I think it's really cool looking. I've enjoyed some of the faded versions I've played, but I'd love to give one in either the standard series or reissue a try.

Also props for the Sister Rosetta Tharpe reference in your notable SG players. I love Watching videos of her rocking out with her white SG custom.

Thanks for the kind words! I, too, have gone in and out of love with the shape. Thank goodness I'm in love with it now.

I bought one of the first-run versions back in the mid-80's, when they made them with the true-to-'61 skinny neck (and packaged them in those hideous blue-lined plastic cases ) - never should've sold it...

It's funny: those are the words I hear the most regarding SGs.

That's a "Dear Penthouse, . . ." for guitars. Thanks for that.

I have a 1964 standard, got it in 1968.
Been looking for the late model 61 re-issue for awhile. You give gas well.

Nice review... and a nice guitar!

I have a fondness for the SG Standard as, in 1970, a new SG Standard was the first guitar I ever bought although my dear departed mom co-signed on the loan. Coincidentally, a friend of mine (who was also in my first band in 7th grade) now owns the exact guitar and I'm able to play it from time to time.

Congrats and enjoy ♫

Very nicely done! That is a lovely guitar.

Am I the only one who keeps finding themselves two frets too high when playing an SG?

I bought a 1968 SG in around 1976 for $350, with the Maestro vibrato. One of the ones I shouldn't have sold, I guess. It never played in tune, could not get the intonation correct, but with what I know now I could have fixed that. Now I have an Epi Korean version that is quite good. What I love about SG's and no one ever mentions is how big they feel in your lap. The have a unique relationship between the neck and the waist of the body that moves the neck around 2 1/2" farther away from you as you play, and that creates a very open and comfortable feeling compared to a Les Paul or a Melody Maker.
