There are a few tools that can get expensive, but as in the case of the nut files, you can use lengths of wound strings to "file" & shape the slot or get a set of welding tip cleaners at Home Depot.
+1 for using welding tip cleaners to file nut slots. I tried this the other day and it worked perfectly (to lower an existing slot as opposed to cut new ones from a nut blank, of course)...saved me a lot of money compared to "proper" nut files from Stew Mac.
