Okay, here's another clue: This song was re-covered in the 90s by a very popular group, with a very original and beautiful remix. I don't usually like remixes, but this one was spot-on and ZOOOOOMMMMEEEEED up the Billboard charts.

Keep Going! This dang pick is burning a whole in my pockets.

I have to leave for an early gig, but another guess:

Wild Night

BINGO! We have a winner!

Do you the story of how "Killing Me Softly" came to be written? Do you know who the other two artists are?

You're the winner anyway. I can tell the story if you don't know it.

It was also covered by The Fugees in 1996 and won a Grammy. Wonderful song.

Let's all congratulate NoChops. I'll be doing another contest probably right after Thanksgiving.

Woohoo!

Please PM me your mailing address.

I'll leave this thread up for a while, till everyone has seen the correct answer.

Now Back To the Bench,
Scott Memmer

Okay, we have a winner. Does anyone know the story and the other two artists connected with this question?

thanks Scott for another real teaser.

I was lucky to see Roberta Flack live back in the early 80s.She also made a wonderful album with Donny Hathaway about 1974 or so....

Yes, and the African American was one of the the Neville Brothers in this rather famous recording of "Bird on a Wire":

I see the winner is "Killing Me Softly".

Folks, there are several different versions of how the song came to be. The most accepted one is that Lori Leiberman (the first female) saw Don McLean (the man) perform in a small club and was really moved by his performance. Let's remember that McLean wrote some very beautiful songs after American Pie, "Starry, Starry Night," "And I Love You So," "Three Flights Up," "Homeless Brother," etc. She went a told a couple songwriting friends, and they wrote the tune. Roberta Flack (the second woman) then covered it and had a #1 hit with it.

I really like The Fugees remixed cover. Here it is. Thank you all for playing. I shall return!

The title of the song that is often confused as “Starry, Starry Night” is actually “Vincent”...a beautiful song.

UPDATE: 12/19: Before I pulled this down, I wanted everyone who was interested to see the question and the answer. It was a lot of fun, and I play on doing another one in December.

Thanks to everyone for participating.

Tom, you're right. I thought of that as I was writing it, but was just too rushed. Thanks for catching that.
