Default Strings for Lowden?

Hey Lowden players: what kind of strings do you like?

I have a short scale (s50) Blackwood/Redwood that came with Elixirs (which I'm not in love with).

I have Martin Retro 12's and a set of SUS 12's on the way.

Any other suggestions? I'd like to narrow the search down from buying a set of everything available on the market.

I mostly play with bare fingers and don't enjoy a lot of tension.

Many thanks.

The Lowden site recommends Elixir Nanoweb Phosphor Bronze strings 12s or 13s which is good enough for me.

I have an S35 in the same wood combination as you have and my favorite strings on that guitar are the Martin Acoustic Lite Custom 11s. They are obviously pretty lite gauge but they have served my Lowden well, particularly with soft finger-style.

+1 for the Wyres PB1356 DADGAD set. Loved them so much on my old Lowden that I kept using them on my harp guitar.

I didn't like Retros on my D32. So far, the ones that give me what I expect a Lowden to sound like are GHS Phosphor Bronze in a Tru Medium gauge. Keeps the airy quality but adds real power.

I've settled on Martin Lifespans for my 025c.

I also would recommend giving these a try - they have been my favourite strings for my my McIlroy Cedar/Walnut A25 for a while (not the same guitar but a distant cousin, shall we say).

However recently - having tried D'addario NB on other (spruce top) guitars I now have them on this guitar as well - and I'm surprised to find that I'm enjoying the change, but not sure if I would stick with these or go back to the Wyres.

Default Strings for Lowden

I will second what txoco said - Newtone Heritage strings are outstanding and seem to have been made for the Irish guitars, FWIW. My 20 year old Lowden 025 has 5 year old Newtones and still sounds terrific! They also sound great on Avalons, not surprisingly.

I have my F23 strung with Thomastik-Infeld Plectrums, and I think they sound great. I had used the Spectrums, which I also liked a lot, but on this particular guitar I prefer the Plectrums.
