The Frontman has twq failings. Then went low cost on the speaker and Fender did not know how to do a distortion channel. Many swap out the speaker, the above amp has a Celestion Tube10 speaker in it. The Ragin' Cajun is a popular swap. Think this is the stock speaker. Not as bad as some say.
And into an Electrovoice. At 3:22 he throws a dirt pedal in front of it. What also makes the recordings better is the mikes or cameras are not dead in the center if the speaker. A lot of people crank up the distortion and mic in the center resulting in a harsh sound. That being said, a tube champ is a classic amp.

interesting thread, i was at the shop a month ago and played frontman 15r, i really liked the sound but just seemed a little small, anyway- i got my super champ X2 used at a super low price, i thought the amp very good, but really didnt like all the amp modes- basically i just settled on one for my style music, so decided to sale it being to much amp and controls for my needs- i did like the reviews of frontman 25r and all the videos of it ( one on here also) actually it paid for the 25r i found plus a little extra, but- i really like the amp- very clean fender sounds- strong reverb (spring i believe)- 2nd channel has enough overdrive for my needs, i know i gave up tubes, but so far i have no regrets

I have a Champ and the reason I bought it instead of the BJ is because it has two channels and the BJ only has one channel, but if you only want/need one clean channel then the BJ is a nice amp. Both are 15w, if I'm not mistaken.

The tweed, blackface, Vibro Champ, and I believe most of the silver face ones are single ended 5W amps. The Super Champ xd is a larger 15W amp.
Edit: the x2 is 15W, not the xd. Got my letters and numbers crossed up there.

I like silverface champs enough to have two, one with alnico Weber, one with ceramic.
They sound glorious together.... Champs are easy to work on or modify, can be found for $250/300, and you will not lose money on an old Fender if you sell it.

Thanks for all of the activity on this...clearly I've hit a good nerve. Nice to see all the glowing reviews of the old champs too.
Going to look at and play one tomorrow. Will make sure to start a NAD thread if I come home with a new addition. |

My 72 mint VibroChamp is the only amp I own. It is not going anywhere.
