Comparison of '71 D-28 and the new D-28A
My original D-28 (1971) and my new D-28 Authentic 1937...
Not great playing, but I just turned on the video and let 'er roll. Still getting used the wide neck and missing strings, but less & less. New strings put on both guitars yesterday, Martin SP4250 (medium phosphor bronze Bluegrass); Blue Chip TAD50 pick. Last edited by kydave; 02-20-2017 at 08:42 PM. Reason: Checking youtube link |

Hmmm... followed the FAQ instructions for youtube posting.
The video shows fine on youtube and fine on UMGF. Any ideas what's the problem here that I did wrong for it not to play? |

You know, I was expecting the 71 to take this in a landslide and I generally prefer the warmer/smoother tone of Sitka, but the Adi topped Authentic sounded really good in this video!
I also liked the Rhiannon lick at the end. One of my favorite Fleedwood Mac songs. Thanks for sharing

Nice video. They both sounded great. Enjoyed the playing as well.
Looks like you were little more comfortable with the 71, but I'm sure it fits you like a glove having owned it 40 plus years compared to the brand new one with the huge neck. Those Authentics are mighty impressive.

Very nice Dave! I think you've got two fantastic iconic Martin's, and a guy would be lucky to have either! I gotta say I preferred the tone of the Authentic, but definitely liked the mojo of the '71!

Dave,
Great idea, it's hard to interpret every little nuance on video but it does give an idea. The A sounds clearer in its range and more defined bass than the 71 but the old 199 has an oomph on chords that creates a bigger sound/presence when meshed. I'm sure it's easier to pick out differences in hand. Both great sounding so it's win-win. |

Thanks, Gents!
As to this: "Both great sounding so it's win-win." Couldn't have said it better myself. |

I'd be curious to see how my old 28 would fall in those, I have yet to experience the 37A- I'm sure it is better for the sake of my wallet

The 37A was not cheap, but for someone who wanted a 'bone ever since I picked up that first D-28, but couldn't afford one (even in '71 they weren't cheap!), this Authentic is THE closest thing I'll ever come to one. |

Hi Dave!
I wouldn't exactly call it night and day. 45 years on that '71 makes it ring like a bell. But, the madi/adi gives the '37 more highs and the same or better bass. I think you're a lucky dude. :-) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

No question for me Dave... the Authentic wins that contest hands down
