For the soft mellow tone that I like I use Martin .60mm made from Delrin which has high stiffness and low friction. They are just a bit flappy, but, not stiff enough to be too twangy. Even with these I often play heavy strumming.

I like my picks .73 to .96 depending on the composition of the pick, and the material I'm playing at the time...

I used the red Mel Bay picks forever, which were probably around .60. But they don't make them anymore and those that I have are getting pretty "flappy."
So I've been scrambling trying to find something else that I like, and have also been trying to get used to thicker picks. I've tried several in the .75 range, but am not entirely happy with them. So put me down for "less than."

I'm currently using the Dunlop Primetone 1.4 & 1.5's. Lately the 1.5mm sound best to me.

My "go to" picks are in the 1.2 to 1.5 mm range. I have thicker and thinner picks that I'll use for certain tones while recording or something, but they are more for special effect than everyday use for me.

A few years back, I decided to try thicker picks, and to commit to giving them a month or so. After that trial, I was amazed how much I liked the thicker pick. I now find they have a much better feel, and the drive and power through the strings is wonderful. Now whenever I try a pick much thinner than the classic "heavy", I get that "playing card in the spokes of a bicycle" effect, and I can't stand it. The trick with the thick picks is to find one that doesn't make the tone too dark. For me, the Primetone 1.4 mm with grip and the 40 BlueChips are the ticket.

The thinnest pick I use is a 1mm Ultex.
My collection goes from 1mm-3mm, though the latter is mostly used on mandolin, but my 1.5mm-2mm picks see a lot of action on six string. |

Am a newer player which explains why I primarily use Dunlop Nylon Standard .46, but did splurge on a pack of .60 today and am trying to get comfortable with those. They make less flapping noise when picking/strumming than the .46 size.

This is really eye opening. It looks like about 3 to 1 favoring thinner than 1mm picks.

I'd be willing to bet a small wager (like all my sub-1.00 mm picks) that most of the thin pick camp have not tried a good thick pick. I'd also bet that most of us thick pickers started out with thin picks, then evolved.

Is there a specific pick you have in mind when you say 'a good thick pick'? |
