Default Last NGD for a while: Martin 00-28 Custom

Got rid of my last long scale acoustic, bought a Gibson Southern Jumbo, but returned it after a day, not liking its sound. I exchanged it for a Martin OO-28 Custom.

This Martin is unique. It was a custom order that the buyer backed out on, leaving the store stuck with a non-standard guitar at a hefty price no one would touch until I spent three days chipping away at it with the shop until today we arrived at a price we both didn't like but could live with.

The Martin logo was deleted from the order: the headstock is totally blank. I wish it was there, but I guess I can have it put in later if I want. It also has hand-picked Guatemalan rosewood and a hand-picked Adirondack top (that doesn't show very well in the picture) with Adirondack hand-scalloped bracing. It has really elegant diamond inlays, which are some of the nicest inlays I've ever seen. Pictures do not do the rosette justice, in person it looks like jewelry around the sound port. And no pickguard, which is good because I hate them. And the fretboard is some of the best looking ebony I've ever seen. They used the best wood on this guitar I think I have ever seen on anything other than a boutique maker's masterpiece.

The guitar has incredible sustain. The sound is incredibly even but you can make the bass, treble or mids stand out with playing technique. It is a finger-picker's dream or you can strum it as hard as you can manage without popping out the strings and the top handles it. It is short-scale 14-fret that's very easy to play. The action needs to come down a smidge for my taste.

The best part about this guitar is that you knew you really wanted it. So it must sound fantastic. That wood looks incredible. You’ll get used to the blank headstock. I actually like it. Great choice!

That looks like a NGD Id like to have. I like those woods and the custom options are perfect. Thanks for sharing.

That’s lovely. Does it have an embossed Martin logo on the back of the headstock?

That sure as heck is a good looking guitar -- play it in good health.

I wouldn't worry about the headstock -- it's a classic form and you know what the guitar is.

WOW! First time I saw a Martin without the logo. I like it. No name and with no pick guard makes the guitar's character lovely and mysterious.
Beautiful instrument in all aspects. Congrats!

Lovely guitar, enjoy. The no logo Martin reminds me of a folk singer in the UK who died about 15 years ago. He played a guitar in the 70s, that had no logo, and every time he appeared at the local folk club newbies would ask what it was. You see in those dark days not many people had ever seen a Martin in the UK. Anyway, some years later he and his wife divorced and he later used to tell the tale of the Martin guitar jigsaw puzzle he now owned. He had left his treasured Martin at home when he left and his wife had delivered it to his new home, deconstructed.
