Default What do you think is going on here.....

I have a well cared for Taylor 310 that is developing a surface blister just past the nut. I am the original owner. Guitar is maintained in the case and seems to be fine humidity wise. I live in Florida, humidify when and if needed and store in the case unless I'm playing it. It's never been dropped or anything like that. I don't know what is causing this. Any help is much appreciated.

The finish is separating form the wood. Possibly due to an application defect or environmental conditions.

I would contact Taylor, this would be covered under your warranty.

It's the original nut. I purchased the guitar brand new around 2004. I've never had any work done to it or even a setup.

To me it looks like the nut has taken a small impact and lifted the edge of the finish, that is why I thought maybe it had been changed and the person simply drifted the old nut out.

Its not a warranty repair that is for sure especially being 13 yrs old.

A local repairer should be able to fix that for you for around 60 bucks

Is the finish a lacquer? I might try to repair myself. At least entertain the ideal.

It's a special clear coat (UV Clear)

Definitely a factory problem with finish adhesion.
I would first try re-adhering the finish by wicking in thin super glue. That has the potential to produce an invisible or near-invisible repair. But there is always the chance that it will leave some witness lines on the edges of the unattached finish. If the super glue repair is not satisfactory, the next step would be to refinish the whole peghead face. Even at that, it should be less than $75.

Looks like a manufacturing issue to me, particularly because there's a spot that remains adhered. I agree with John Arnold's observation that it appears to show original finish failing to adhere. While I would not hesitate to do the CA re-adhesion or other fix myself, since I have experience, having it done under warranty -- if Taylor's warranty covers it -- is probably what most would do. As others observe, even the worst-case fix -- headstock refin -- is routine.

Thank you for the comments, much appreciated. I think I'll reach out to Taylor first to see what they say. If it's on me to fix, I'll try the CA re-adhesion. If that goes south, I'll pay to have it fixed.

I love the matter of factual statement.

Here is another guitar with a finish adhesion problem.

Is it the finish that is at fault or the fact its taken a hit to the headstock, the finish has broken away from the base wood.
