It's a logarithmic scale though. I believe that means a 4.8 is 8 times as powerful as a 4.0.

As long as the New Madrid is quiet, I'm good.

After moving to California in 1986, the first earthquake I experienced was the Loma Prieta in 1989. It was 6.8 on the Richter scale. Was out on a job and suddenly things just started to move. I watched a sliding glass door go from a rectangular to a parallelogram shape and back again without breaking. At the same time, a wave of earth passed through the swimming pool area, and about half of the water splashed out. Growing up in New England, I had never felt the earth move like that. Since then there have been more quakes over the years, fortunately, nowhere near as strong. With the exception of one when I was living in the Napa Valley, which literally shook my wife and I out of bed, they’ve been much more mild, and usually just short, gently swaying ones.

4.8? That's barely a trembler.
My first was 5.9 (October 1, 1987). The last one that I recall personally experiencing was the Loma Prieta in October 17, 1989 (6.9).
