Actually you can usually find a pretty decent deal in the Classifieds. 12-strings usually cost an extra $200 or so when new compared to a 6-string equivalent, but tend to move a lot slower on resale and get marked down accordingly.
Thanks- I had seen this ad, but there is no way I would buy used without being able to inspect the guitar. This one is unfortunately in Arizona.

I have no relation to either.
first one is beautiful.

second one is a 1980. Older guitars would have to sell at a big discount for me to buy one.

I have a used Takamine EF381SC that I got for $500. It is a great, plugged in, gigging 12 string. At home, though, the 12 I play is my Guild F412. Won't find one of those for $1,000 or less, but it's plainer cousin the JF30-12 as others have said, can be had used for $1,000 or less.

I would have tried one, if I could have found one in my price range, which was about half of yours. What I found was this.... with the help of another forum member.

Very easy to play. Sound really nice. They're are probably harder to find ( US made Ovation 12 string with Deep Bowl ) than a Guild or Taylor 12 string, but to my ears, it would have to be a darn NICE 12 string to be better playing and sounding.
Oh man, I told myself I was just gonna go on AGF for a minute, now im all full of GAS again...I gotta stay away from you guys.

Hey, there is nothing wrong with Arizona. (ok, other than summer)

They are also both mine. However four 12-strings is really at least one too many.

I have a Breedlove atlas 12 string that I love! I was in the market for one for four years and played many different twelves, never a guild though. The string spacing on the breedlove is perfect and does not feel oversized in my hands when I play. This is my main live guitar. Sound wise it beat out the rest and for finger style its sings like the angels. It has a great presence for a concert sized body. Check out the other 12 string threads and you will not get too far before you find mention of breedloves, there is a lot of love for these and rightfully so.

I went with a Vintage Kasuo Yairi Alvarez. Never regretted it one second.

I bought a Breedlove Atlas series (solid sitka top , mahog laminate b & s) 12 string new around 7 years ago for $750 at GC. A sweet, easy to play instrument that gets raves whenever I play out on it. In my opinion it blows away a friend's Taylor 356 (at more than twice the price--or is it 355?????), although I covet a high-end Taylor 12, especially a Koa -bodied Taylor. Not sure how Breedlove has changed its nomenclature since 2006, but at the time the Atlas series had Asian-made parts with final assembly in Oregon. Not much low end growl in standard tuning but lots of jingle jangle.

I really like the Harmony Stella 922 and Sovereign 1270 12 stringers. Key is to find one with a good neck and you will have to live with tuning the thing down but these guitars have a sound all their own that I prefer over pretty much anything else other than an early Gibson B45-12.

Look for a used Alvarez or Yairi. They make the best sounding 12 strings I have ever played.
Here's a photo of me playing my Alvarez.
