The second question is a 2-parter:

What headstock and what scale/fret length?

The reason these 2 have to go together is because I have decided to build this with the Voyage Air neck. My decision is based on:

1. It will save everyone about 30% in shipping to the next person on the Road Show
2. I truly believe the neck enhances sustain
3. It adds versatility to the guitar
4. It comes full circle from where I started to where I am now.
5. It is a design I am committed to.

Now, for it to fit in the case the length of the neck from neck joint to the end of the headstock can’t exceed the body length so if I do a slothead for instance it needs to be on a 12 fret neck.
So the options are:

1. Slothead – 12 fret either 24.75 or 25.5 scale
2. Paddle – (full-size) 12 fret 24.75 or 25.5 scale
3. VG paddle – 14 frets 24.75 or 25.5 scale

I could even recreate the "original" headstock shape as an option to #2

P.S. Steve, I've already put you down for a slothead

Harvey,
Since this guitar would go on a Road Trip I think it would appeal to mre players/playing styles if it were a 14 fretter. As far as scale length, I'd say base it on what scale length works best on this body size for the tone you want.

14 fret, 24.75" scale (with the VG paddle). One of the things I like about dread shapes is how the waist is wide enough not to constrict the bridge when placed in the 14 fret position, more centered between the upper transverse brace and tail block. And the position for 24.75" scale on a ~19.5" long, 15" wide body is just right.

Very cool doing the Voyage Air to cut down on shipping I am most definitely in on the road trip now.

...but if I redo the "original" headstock I won't be putting the tuners on upside down this time....
What can I say I was a banjo builder back then

I agree with Chuck on 14 frets and scale length, and tend to like paddles more than slots. Maybe prejudiced...

Since I have heard 14s and a 15 from you, I want to hear a 12.

So I vote paddle-12

Got to see that guitar today. Yup, tuners on upside down. I'm not sure but I think it had the original strings on it. Saw Harvey's first banjo too...

Thanks Harv, I enjoyed the afternoon. Still thinking about the African Blackwood guitar with the Tibetan Bowl effect overtones of the harmonics. That bi-noral beat or oscillation was something. Very cool to have a guitar with a tibetan bowl effect built in. I hope a new age player gets that guitar.

...was that a vote for one of the options

Yeah, that blackwood dread is rather haunting for sure. I still like the "Tree" one better though because it's a bit more forgiving (and when you play like I do you need a lot of forgiveness!) for someone with better articulation (like you) the blackwood would be a killer guitar.

...and no they weren't the original strings... but at least 10 years old

Default Next Question! (the fun one)

OK, so it would seem the vote is for a 14 fret in the scale I think best so I’m going to go with the 25.5 scale, mostly because I’ve used it in the past and liked the results. Also going with the VG paddle headstock... now don’t get me wrong... I love the look of a slothead but I will cry no tears... a challenge to finish in those slots with the UV finish!

Onto the next question:

The best part of a build is selection the wood! So what back and side woods ya like?

I have a very similar set of walnut to this

A nice set of sort of chocolate Brazilian (this is unfinished, would be much darker and more redish)

I have a sequential set of this Koa

I'm even willing to use a set of this mahogany I found in my woodshed

Sorry I don't have any "nice" stuff to choose from.....

Harv

Gotta vote for the mahogany! From the looks of it, and your earlier posts, I assume it's from The Tree.

Well, personally the story of The Tree makes me quite angry, that the first instinct of humans upon discovery of a living monument is to kill it. But what's done is done, and the wood is insanely gorgeous and I would love to hear it in person, so I'm going to vote Tree mahogany (I'm secretly hoping there will be "millennium redwood" giant sequoia in the top wood list to go with it )

Can't wait to see this build get off the ground!

Well, Harv, as you might suspect, I think you should go with Honduran mahogany from "the tree". And although I like the redwood idea, I'd vote LS redwood rather than Giant Sequoia. The flame on Giant Sequoia sets I've seen has been insane, but the tonal qualities of LS and the gorgeous but very subtle grain and silking of LS, paired with the mahogany, is just not to be missed.

Sounds like a killer guitar in the making to me!!!

Thanks for letting us chime in!

Best,

Phil
