It comes down to a limited thought process where by learning a scale shape or M/m pentatonic scale is a lesson learned and that's the end. To me it's just one way to learn the fret board. There are many ways to do that. But the goal should be to ultimately open up the fret board so that the direction in which you learned it fades away and is replaced by motor skills and a trained ear that is used to make music.
