Default Tone wood for a cajon top?

I don't see anyone building cajons with solid wood playing surfaces. AFAIK even the high end ones use 1/8" birch plywood. I am making a bongo cajon & it's not a very wide surface, so I wonder if it would benefit from solid wood. One "pad" is 7" & the other is 8 1/2" diameter. At present I don't have any solid pieces to experiment with, so I was wondering what your thoughts are.

Thanks,
kev

As I understand it, plywood is specifically used. The (lack of) thickness is why it is vibrate like it does and the fact that it is plywood makes it stronger than a solid piece of wood. Most players I have ever seen would be through solid wood pretty quick.
