fingerstyle rock/ pop songs to learn
Hi all,
After years of strumming I'm finally getting into a bit of fingerstyle, which I'm finding a challenging but rewarding experience. I am (slowly) working my way through Mark Hanson's book - Beyond Basics: Fingerstyle Guitar, and have also just learnt English Rose by The Jam and Fast Car by Tracey Chapman off some youtube videos. When I have got a bit better I hope to learn Clapton's Tears in Heaven, but wondered if anyone could recommend other songs in this style to try? |

Hey There Delilah. Good tune to practice your timing with fingerstyle.

The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel. Only four chords, C Am F G with easy changes. The intro, although it sound complex, is really not that hard to do.

A cool song to learn is Lindsey Buckingham's "Big Love." There is a You Tube with him teaching it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90fRFQ671IE A lot of Gordon Lightfoot songs are played with the Travis pick also -- "Song for a Winter's Night," "All the Lovely Ladies," "Steel Rail Blues," etc are good songs to learn as just a few examples. James Taylor doesn't generally use the Travis pick, but his style, at least to me, is very interesting. He does some teaching on these videos. http://www.jamestaylor.com/guitarlessons/ "Carolina on my Mind" is pretty rewarding and not terribly hard. Jim Croce's songs are often finger picked. Many of John Denver's, too. Also, John Fogelberg. Pete Huttlinger does a great job on instructional videos for these folks. - Glenn |

A great song! Weller's one of my all-time favorites.
Give the Stone's "As Tears Go By" a whirl, too.

The second (backing) guitar part of Can't Find My Way Home can be played as straight up Travis Picking. Two of my favorite Zeppelin songs to fingerpick are Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (arpeggiated chords with some strumming) and Going To California (Travis Picking in open G). I've had decent luck just picking songs I like and trying them as alternating bass songs. Some convert really well, and some just don't sound right to me.
