My favorite finish is oil varnish, but I offer a variety of finishes.
There's an excellent discussion about finishes used by various builders in this thread on the OLF.

There is no best clear coat. All have advantages and disadvantages.
What are you looking for? Something easy to apply, non-toxic, quick drying, catalyzed cure, super thin, easy to repair, brush on, spray on, do it yourself, send it out, clear, amber, etc.....

Dude, be a little more specific....i can tell you i use "DEFT" clear wood finish, gloss brushing lacquer...just because im lazy..and dont like to sand...for my furinture and for repairing guitars...Solo And i use bowling alley polish, just for the back of the guitar.....everyone diff,, on this.....and diff projects call for diff. things...good luck, Solo
