Default Best Advice You've Received on AGF?

I was reading the "Compared to other forums" thread which shows how much value AGF members have gotten from advice here among other things.

It made me wonder: what's the most valuable/useful bit of advice you've gotten on AGF?

Mine came from a very accomplished guitarist who said I if you have a problem passage get a pile of 50 pennies. Play through the passage very slowly and perfectly. Every time you do remove a penny till there's no more... then do it again the next day. (We no longer have pennies in Australia but it was useful advice anyway )

The reason is it works, but maybe more importantly shows what it takes in terms of effort and dedication to be really, really good at what we do... have you ever tried to play a passage slowly 50 times over? (For the record, I'm still a hack, but getting better veerrry slowly)

Anyone else want to share what's been there most useful bit of advice from AGF?

Best advice I've received was, "Stay away from the classifieds."

Wished I have listened to that...

Seriously though, the best advice I've received here (and heard often) is to spend more time playing guitar than reading about playing guitar.

I've been turned on to some amazing artists via recommendations here.

Had a real breakthrough when I learned the big round hole faces front.

I value the motivation more then any particular piece of advice. Whether it is viewing or listening to music on the "show and tell" sub forum, or folks posting the music of their favorite artist, i get motivated to play and try new ideas.

I don't know if it is in the best advice category, but again and again, when someone posts a "what are you reading" link, I look closely and have discovered some amazing books.

^^ This. I've been playing for a LONG time now, so I tend to dispense some advice, hoping to share the wisdom I've accumulated the hard way. But that doesn't mean that new knowledge isn't gained along the way. I learn something new every day.

Some of the best advice received (both in the forum and via PM) was how to use the CP function to add about a dozen names to the "ignore" list when someone got contentious. It makes the browsing experience smoother and less frustrating. Most folks here are great, but some people just do not play well with others.

AGF is a more interactive version of and substitute for the guitar magazines that I no longer subscribe to.

This is where I learned about BC picks and Elliott capos, both of which have made my playing more enjoyable.

I like that!

The best information I got was about 6-7 years ago when I asked questions about Collings guitars. I got excellent info which I appreciated very much. Five Collings guitars later, I'm an unabashed fan.

I only joined about 5 months ago as the other forum I belong to is very much lacking in acoustic information.

I am in the hunt for an Alvarez guitar and have so far received two pieces of advice/information that has helped me narrow down my search to two models.

Best advice I received came from Wade Hampton Miller. Seven years ago he recommended I consider a Gibson CJ-165. It was a good recommendation.

  • "Don't be in such a rush...There are other guitars."
  • "It isn't a competition, it's about making music."
  • "Always remember, tone is subjective."
  • "Spend more time playing and less time here."

A compilation of recommendations for the Yamaha FG series as a quality budget guitar.

I'm certainly happy with mine.

"Be nice" , doesn't always come easy, but rewarding if you can pull it off.
