Default NGD Ramirez 1a 10 String

I had completed a guitar rack this summer with two spare slots. I discovered that my old lute guitar fit so that left one last spot. I wanted to get something special as an early retirement gift to myself and I had been looking at 10 string classical guitars on the net.

So in a moment of weakness from a GAS attack I found a 1979 Ramirez 1a 10 String guitar on epray. It was a bit of a stretch at $3500 U.S. but it looked pretty nice from the pictures and the seller is a respected seller of 10 string guitars in Texas. I was nervous about it being stopped at the border due to CITES limitations on ebony and rosewood but the guitar made it through with no problems. Very speedy and safe shipping (thanks Cathedral Guitars).

I got the guitar today and haven't had much time to play with it yet but it looks pretty nice. Now I have to get used to the giant neck. Here's a couple snaps of it in my guitar rack, I'll have to take a few more of it when I get the chance.

That is awesome, congratulations! Great to see another person in the 10 string club. Stephen at Cathedral is very knowledgeable with a well deserved positive reputation. Bet she sounds incredible. Cedar top I'm guessing? Enjoy!

Thank you. I am really enjoying the overtones from this guitar with a cedar top. And can she ever play loud! A very full and sweet sound. Stephen at Cathedral Guitars was very easy to deal with, I definitely recommend him.

I have an 8-string Ramirez 1a from 1973. Sweet.

Is your 10-string an original Ramirez 10-string or did Cathedral convert it from a 6-string?

How are you stringing it up? Yepes re-entrant or Baroque-Romantic?

It is an original 10 string.and not a conversion from a six string. I have it tuned in the same way as Narcisco Yepes did as I think that gives the best overtones. At least that's what I think I've done. But I am new to 10 string guitars so I have a lot to learn.

A few more pics of my Ramirez 1a 10 string. It was difficult to get a picture of the grain of the top as the guitar is so shiny the reflections wash out the pic. There are no imperfections on the top even though it looks that way from the reflections.

Thanks! Yes, it is a 664 mm scale. It really isn't harder to play than my other classicals for the scale length but it is going to take some time for my thumb to find the right bass strings. It is easy to get lost on the fingerboard with a 85 mm (3 1/3") nut width. But I have the power, he man.

Thank you for the pix. A wonderful guitar that looks like my 1973 plus two more strings. I find the spicy sweet aroma pretty wonderful whenever I pull it out of its case.

I hope to score a 10-string one day.

Really nice.
Hearty congrats. I had been eyeing a 10 string Ramirez just like that a few years ago. It was in Gruhn's inventory and was listing at $3500. or thereabouts, which I thought was a real good price.
I wonder if this is that same guitar?
In any case, it's a beauty. Enjoy the new sounds!

Wow I've never seen a 10 string classical before, and I wasn't aware that Ramirez made such a beast! It looks tricky.

Thanks guys, I am really enjoying my new guitar. I can play it like a normal six string with the extra strings offering extra "body" to the sound with the sympathetic resonance. I am still struggling with my thumb finding the right bass strings but that will come with time. My GAS has been quenched (unless I find a deal on a nice Flamenco guitar).

I am trying the Romantic/Baroque tuning for the four extra strings and the regular six are in standard tuning, so:

A
B
C
D
E
A
D
G
B
E

Very cool guitar. Look at the width of that neck! Would love to hear a recording or two.

Congratulations!
