Default Sound of 180 year old Martin

Wow, how in the world did this guitar arrive at 2024 in such pristine condition, that is incredible. The piece he plays is very pretty, how awesome it would be to have a nice fire going in the dead of winter in your sitting room with your lady and this fellow plays this!

I did a restoration on one of the same age a few months back, it was an honor to have such an example of an early American guitar in my shop. When you think about the lives these instruments touched, their own journey through life it's just incredible really. That one has a great tone though I have no doubt the player has a lot to do with bringing the tone out of it.

Don't let Quentin Tarantino anywhere near that guitar.

From his 2015 film The Hateful Eight.

The caption that accompanies the video:

A scene from The Hateful Eight (2015) where Kurt Russell unknowingly smashes an authentic, antique 145-year-old six-string guitar, on loan for filming use from the Martin Guitar Museum. This scene was meant to be cut, a prop put in place, and then for the smashing to occur. For some reason that was probably not communicated. You can see Jennifer Jason Leigh genuinely react in shock.

I've played and studied traditional noter/drone mountain dulcimer for many years. And I used to play dobro in a bluegrass band.

Wild Mountain Thyme predates bluegrass by a couple hundred years. If someone made a rap cover, it wouldn’t make it rap…

Mmmm...... I think that you missed the point of the humour a little. It's not that the song is bluegrass.... It's that the song is good for bluegrass, unlike the guitar.

Just as an aside... There are an awful lot of bluegrass "classics" that actually pre-date bluegrass. And if someone made a rap cover of Wild Mountain Thyme then the performance actually would be rap.

Obviously my comment about the guitar not being good for bluegrass was tongue in cheek...

As for that song being an example of bluegrass, my Welsh father would say "then my arse would be a shirt button..."

I don’t think I can stand to watch that...
