Default Is Reverb's "Safe Shipping" worth it or a scam?

Just had a guitar sell on Reverb, which I haven't had happen since it was bought out by Etsy. Shipping an $8800 guitar, which requires me to use their "Safe Shipping" insurance option if I use their label process. That along with UPS Ground is going to cost $260. When I sell here on AGF, I usually use Pirate Ship, which in this case gives me a rate of $50 for UPS ground, and $95 total if I add their "Shipsafe" insurance for $5000 (that's the maximum it allows).

Is it worth the extra money for either insurance? I paid a lot of money for declared value insurance with UPS once, they destroyed/lost the package, and refused to pay out my claim even though I had also paid them to pack it to their supposed standards. After that, I gave up on buying UPS insurance.

I don't mind paying extra for insurance, but I don't want to fork over and extra $210 to Reverb if it's the typical "we never pay unless you sue us" kind of insurance that is basically worthless.

I had a claim through reverb about 2 years back and they did a wonderful job of covering shipping, it was really nice, it was a high end Santa Cruz that got a bunch of finish checks during shipping in the winter and I got a quote from SCGC about the cost of pro refinish and I got a check from Reverb for that amount. I was quite impressed!

I shipped a great guitar, got lost by UPS.
Reverb refunded the customer, and I kept the sales.
It’s great. I use it for every Reverb sale because they deal with the claim.
I still prefer to sell privately. much cheaper, but smaller audience.

This is very reassuring ! Thanks for sharing

I haven’t sold much on the Verb since they were sold

But I will continue to use the safe shipping if and when I do

Safe Shipping was very helpful for me last year to cover a shipping damaged electric guitar (large chip in gel coat) that needed three deliveries before the buyer was home to receive it.

Customer Service was responsive and simpathetic to me to help get it resolved with what turned out to be a slow-to-respond buyer who started off wanting to just cancel the order, get their money back and return the guitar to me. Reverb fully covered the difference from my selling price and the final, customer agreed-upon value accounting for the damage.

I've only had one issue, which was a crunched pickguard on a very expensive Ricky 12-string; once reverb was notified, they jumped right in & got a new pickguard installed. They actually do step in and make it right.

Does eBay have a similar shipping discount and insurance option? Or should I go through Pirate ship or something?

Reverb also has an account that sells items damaged in shipping. I suppose in some cases they pay for the item via this policy and turn around and sell it to help cover cost.

I've never had an issue but I have personal insurance on all my guitars that covers shipping damage or loss. If you have insurance on your $8800 guitar (and you should), you don't need additional insurance from UPS, Ebay, Reverb or anyone. Check your policy.

Another one here who has used it with good results. It's pretty much a no questions asked policy. If you can prove with pictures, docs, etc. that a guitar has been damaged or lost in shipping they will make everyone whole and quickly at that.
