Artists playing classical guitar with singing for folk, country, blues, soul?
Not looking primarily for jazz and latin type stuff - for which there are far more examples.
Primarily folk, country, blues, soul, fusion, etc. I'll start it off with these: Jose Gonzalez. Willie Nelson. Leonard Cohen So let's see what comes of this. Can also be an artist who only uses a classical for one recording, or one live song, or whatever. I just love the classical/vocals combo for these kinds of genres. Thanks in advance Last edited by microscope; 11-28-2017 at 09:05 AM. |

Late Chet Atkins was playing classical guitars for some folk songs in his guitar lesson video, and it was good.
Also saw a youtuber playing classical guitar for jazz music, and it was cool too. Cannot recall his ID or name though. |

Take a look into the work of Michael Johnson, who played nylon almost exclusively. He trained classically in Spain but made his mark in the pop/folk/country world. He was a phenomenal guitarist and entertainer, and sadly, died too soon just this past July at age 72. I was lucky enough to see him in concert three times in the past ten years and watching him play got me back into nylon and moved my playing ahead after a period of stagnation.
His longtime friend who runs his web page just set up a Youtube Channel for him.

The Corries
Cyril Tawney Chet Atkins played a Del Vecchio nylon string reso, in addition to classical. I like this: I think that Mark must be playing Chet's Del Vecchio. It sounds more like gypsy jazz than blues to me.

The classic guitar is essentially standard for Latin jazz and a great deal of Latin folk and pop music as well.
Earl Klugh (jazz/pop) plays nylon exclusively. My wife performed folk and pop tunes for years with her classical. |

The Beatles!
Every once in a while, the Beatles used classical guitar. I think that they used on in the song "And I Love Her" in the solo. There are other songs as well, but they aren't coming to mind

Joe pass recorded a wonderful solo, nylon string album, "Songs for Ellen". I think this was his final recording and it was dedicated to his wife.

Jerry Reed was no stranger to nylon string guitars. Roger Miller played on classical guitars too, now and again
