I've never owned one, but if I hadn't just picked up a dread, I would have taken home an all mahogany Collings D1H in December from Artisan Guitars in Franklin, Tennessee. It had a mid-range magic with that "something extra" of the OM1 Treenewt describes above--and power to shake the walls. I'd only played all mahogany smaller bodies. The Collings all mahogany dread still has me thinking about it.

Santa Cruz 00 1929. I've owned two. Exceptional guitars. Small, comfortable to play, extremely light-weight, incredible build quality, beautiful (especially the second one I had in their dark burst finish) and last but not least the epitome of sweet, dry, woody mahogany tone.

Absolutely in love with both of my all-mahogany Martins: 2014 size 5 custom terz and 1938 00-17.

Saw the 1938 00-17 on the wall at Sylvan Music, thought it looked “muddy” and was only interested in a spruce topped 000-18. Played the 00-17 and had a profound “oh my...” moment after I heard that chocolate tone and felt the responsiveness. Incredible! All mahogany for me at that point on.

Mahogany”s rich fundamental vs. high end shimmer is where it’s at, in my opinion.

We have several. Here is a bunch of them.

Back row -- 1944 Martin 00-17 and 1955 Martin 00-17
Front row -- 1942 Gibson LG-1, 1933 Martin 0-17 and 1925 Martin 0-18K.
On ground -- 1934 Oahu square neck, 1955 Martin T-15

These are all amazing instruments -- but different. 1933 Martins of any kind are among the most beautiful sounding instruments ever built and the 0-17 is no exception. This was the first year for 14-frets for most models other than the OMs, and their construction was almost per-modern -- or more correctly the first true modern guitars. After 1933, it was all downhill -- not by much of course, but IME 1933 is the best tone year ever for Martin. So that is the best. But not by much.

Let's pick,

-Tom

My Taylor 528e First Edition, closely followed by my 562ce 12 string and 324e.

My first guitar was a Gibson LG0 in 1964 and all mahogany has been my favorite type of guitar ever since.

I'd love to hear that. Do you have a recording?

I've only owned the one 00-15, so it's my favorite, but I know that, in the store, the 000-15 sounded better. At the time, though, I was very green and worried about neck size, so went with the more comfortable alternative.

I've been thinking about this since the thread got resurrected a few days ago. I've got three, and love them all (though in full disclosure, I sould say that the Taylor prototype has layered Sapele back & sides, so maybe it doesn't count).

Choosing one, I'd have to go with my 000-15. It's just a special guitar to me. I bought it new in 2009 after deciding to get back into playing after a multi-decade hiatus, and I could not have chosen a better guitar as my gateway back into the passion. It plays and sounds great, and it accompanies my singing voice beautifully. I have written my best songs on it, and it has been with me for many of my best gigs. Thank you Brown Bella!

Here are all three. Again, I love them all!
