Yes, I believe there would be a huge difference, especially in sound. However the interesting part is, if your budget is limited to $1000, which one would you get? A genuine Martin DRS2 (which is a bit over budget but fair enough), or a fake D-42, with the fact that the counterfeit might even sound better because it has better wood, the same construct with its archetype and an average build quality as other mid-end guitars made in China? Will you trade your faith with these advantages, along with the vanity of owning a legendary model (even though a fake one)?

The counterfeits don't own the name, they are just stealing it. Martin's trademark in China has been retrieved by their China division in 2016.
