Nice clear shot! What do you do with the 3rd mic, Eric?

By the way, check out the mic positions in this photo of Tony McManus recording his Dream Guitars Vol 2 CD. Is this an unusual setup, or what? At least 5 mics if you count the stereo Brauner. There might be a 6th one in there, hard to tell.

First, were all the mikes actually being used for the recording?
Second, if so how do you mono this? It seem clearly done for max stereo sound stage.
Third, is there a clip of this recording out there to sample?

No, I don't have any idea if all these mics ended up being used. Wish I did. I asked Paul about this at one point, and I think he said they mostly used the 2 close in mics (which are already in an unusual position), with the others as room mics, but I could be remembering this wrong.

There are samples on the dream guitars site:

http://dreamguitars.stores.yahoo.net/mamacdtomc.html

and of course the whole CD is for sale.

I'm pleased with the results I get in my home studio using the Rode NT4 stereo mic. I know that using a single XY stereo mic is more limiting than using multiple mics in creating the most optimum acoustic sound stage. However because I am on my own in the studio, the NT4 provides me with a no-muss-no-fuss solution that enables me to focus on making music and recording with good results.

Thanks Doug, I found the clips however I always wonder why if you are trying to showcase a guitar you do it with a 128 bit rate mp3 like these clips. Things really start to fall apart soundwise below 192.

I think those are meant to be teasers for the music, and they hope you'll buy the CD. Many people can't tell the difference, I suspect, anyway, especially if they're listening over computer speakers.

That’s an AT4050 that engineer happened to like a lot. I have one too... I guess he was hearing something, I can't remember now. I should have some samples of that pretty soon. It’s a CD with bass and drums, and I’m mostly playing single note stuff, so it’s a little different mix than the solo guitar thing.

I’m guessing they were pretty stoked with the room sound

Exactly my point! People may not know the difference to be able to articulate it but either they like it or not. Might as well do all you can in a teaser to make a sale.

Hi Rick...
What do you think a better bitrate is going to do for a teaser?

I've bought many a song/album from sample mono clips at 64kbps...

Pretty simple Larry. It will sound better. People select music to buy for many reasons of course but no reason to shoot yourself in the foot
with a low bit rate when there is no good reason for it. Broadband use is over eighty percent of the market for active internet users.

I'd like to address everyone individually, but work is a bit nutty today. Thanks to each and every one of you for contributing to this thread, it has given me a lot to think about in terms of my approach.

I really regret being so "delete happy" with most of my recordings to this point!!
