Hi Joseph, Welcome to the AGF.
Are you able to play the Epi first? Does it have a bolt on neck or is it a set neck? I probably would do the trade for the set neck assuming I liked the way it felt in my hands. |

I'm new to electric guitars (just bought my first a couple of weeks ago), but I would imagine they would be two different sounding guitars (P90s vs Humbuckers).
Also, looking at pictures, the Yamaha would be easier to reach the higher frets due to the more extreme cutaway. I don't know how much the Yamaha weighs, but I would imagine it weighs less then the Epiphone LP Standard (I tried a lot of the Epiphones and they had substantial weight to them). That said, for me.. I prefer the LP style guitars and if you tried it and liked it, I say "why not?".

The Epi's are very good for their price range, but there can be quality issues, so play the one you're interested in before buying.
