Default HDMI "handshaking"

You guys are smart. Is there anyone out there who can explain "HDMI handshaking" to me?

I've never had so much video trouble since I started using HDMI to connect all my AV components. Every time the power goes out/on I lose some component in the system. The video goes out but the audio remains, even though both are coming thru the same cable.

In trying to solve the latest problem, which knocked out both a home theater receiver and projector, the technician tried to direct me thru an HDMI handshaking reset procedure. I'd never heard of such a thing. I just think you're supposed to plug things in and have them work. There isn't any communication protocol necessary when you plug in a toaster.

Is there some sort of software control for HDMI that requires that all of your devices speak the same dialect?
